Dukesfield and Killhope fire the imagination of Whitley Chapel pupils

What a great display of painting, prints and spar boxes at the Hexhamshire Leek Club Show on Saturday! Pupils from Whitley Chapel First School took part in various activities at Dukesfield in the summer term organised by the Smelters and Carriers Project and also went on a trip to Killhope. The fruits of their work, inspired by the lead industry heritage around us, were there for all to see in a really impressive exhibition at Saturday’s show. Here are a few examples of their work. Well done Whitley!

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
