Two great open days at dig

They came, they saw, they asked questions, they puzzled, they completed questionnaires, they explored the site. In all about 100 people came to the open days over the Bank Holiday. They came by bike, on foot and even by horse (not quite a carrier pony but close!)

Digging continued as the conversations went on with a new wall being found in the ‘storage building’ just before the day’s end. ‘What a shame this has to be covered in’ was a familiar refrain from visitors. Perhaps something can be done…Here are a few pictures from Monday

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
