Northumberland Archives

If you have arrived here from an external catalogue or site, welcome to ‘Dukesfield Documents’. Please take a look at the features on offer within this large 17th-19th century North-eastern history research archive centred on the Blackett and Beaumont lead business records by selecting ‘Dukesfield Documents’ in the navigation.

The majority of material in ‘Dukesfield Documents’ is held at Northumberland Archives at Woodhorn, and mostly from within two of their collections – the Allendale Estate papers and the Blackett of Matfen papers, and the downloadable files are organised within those sub-headings below.

We are grateful to Lord Allendale and to Sir Hugh Blackett for granting access to their papers and to the staff of Northumberland Archives for their invaluable assistance during the course of the project. Full details of what is available at Woodhorn, research services, their online catalogue, directions and opening hours can be found here

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
