Tuesday 11th March 1834 This being the day appointed for payment of the Dividend of the Assignees of the Arkendale Mines Company, I attended at Hexham on the part of the Commissioners, having previously examined the accounts, & seen the Boards authority for concurring in the Agreement come to by the Creditors, to accept a Dividend of 12/- in the Pound. The Hospitals claim amounted to £2347.7.0 according to the accompanying statement - and the Dividend and Interest in the Bills to £1461.1.1. of which £704.4.1 was paid in Cash and the remainder in Bills at 12, 18 & 24 Months with Interest, for which, according to the Conditions of the Agreement, I had to sign a discharge and give an undertaking to deliver up the Bills of which I gave them a Copy, I believe the originals to be at Greenwich. I again spoke to Mr Hall on the Subject of the damage assessed by the Alston Jury, for land destroyed by the working of the Mine, belonging to Mr Dickinson of Lovelady Shield, which he undertook to settle. The Corn Market today was as low as ever, & I was assailed by many of the Tenants declaring that it was impossible for them to make up their Rents, & that they must have an abatement or leave their Farms.
