This Indenture made the twentieth day of November in the third yeare of the reigne of our Soveraigne Lord Charles by the grace of God of England Scotland France & Ireland being defender of the faith &c Betwene the right rev[er]end father in God Richard by the grace of god Bishopp of Durham on the one p[ar]tie And Edward Liveley of the Citty of Durham in the County pallatyne of Durham gent on the other p[ar]tie Witnesseth that the Said Revrend father for divers good causes & considerations him thereunto moving hath  demised grant & to farme letten & by these pre[sen]ts for him & his Successors doth demise grant & to farme lett unto the Said Edward Liveley all & Singular Such Lead Ewer called Lott Ewer as of right or by custome is due appertaining & belonging to the said Revend Father wthin the Forrest of Weardaile in the County pallatyne of Durham aforesaid Sometimes in the tenure & occupation of John Vaux gent & William Vaux his Sone or either of them To have and to hold all the Said lead Ewer [ore] called Lott Ewer to the Said Edward Liveley his Executors Administrators & assignes from the making hereof unto the full end & terme & for & during the whole terme of one & twenty years from thenceforth next & immediately following fully to be compleat <ended> & <pu….> in as large & ample manner & forme as the said John Vaux William Vaux or any others have or might have had occupied & injoyed the Same Yielding and paying therefore yearly during the Said terme unto the said Revrend Father his Successors or assignes the Sume of five pounds lawfull money of England at the feast of th’annunciation of the blessed Virgin Mary & St. Michael the archangell or within fortie days after by even & equall portions In Witnes whereof the parties abovesaid to these present Indentures have interchangeably put their hands & Seales the day & yeare first above written 1627 [added above in a different hand: ‘1727’ and below: ‘100’]

Richard Neile was Bishop of Durham 1617 – 1627. Edward Liveley was his secretary, both in Durham and afterwards in Winchester.  He was constable of Durham Castle.

4 October 20 James I (1622) Lease by Bishop Richard Neile to Edward Liveley of the city of Durham, gent., of: the borough and town of Sunderland nigh the Sea, with borough rent, free rents, duties, customs and profits; the port, haven and creek of Sunderland from the bar and low watermark to the New Bridge nigh Lumeley Park commonly called Lumeley port, creek and haven with benefits and profits on all merchandise imported at Sunderland; the ferry boat of Sunderland and free passage across the water on both sides, excepting only vessels carrying goods for the Bishop.
