Dear Sir
Thomas Crawhall has been with the Commissioners under the Property Tax Act at Darlington to make Appeal to the exorbitant assessment of £5,000 Duty charged on Col & Mrs Beaumont’s Mines in Weardale, which I am sorry to inform you has not been attended with the desired Success.
A return was delivered to them made out in the Manner you mentioned which they have not thought proper to accept of; they demand a further Inspection of the Accounts, as you will perceive by a Copy of the Receipt which I enclose you, & have appointed Friday the 20th Instant for that purpose. The Conduct of those Commissioners has been very illiberable towards Col Beaumont & his Agents in this Country, & if it suits your Convenience I submit to you, whether it may not be proper for you to meet them on that Day; on your favouring me with your answer to the Contrary I shal make Mr Heron acquainted with the Business and desire his Attendance along with Mr Emerson and T. Crawhall. The Rev[ren]d E. Davison who is one of the Commissioners, expressed the return made to them to be clearly a subterfuge, & seemed to insinuate that what the Agents of Mr Beaumont say was not to be depended upon.

By the amended Schedules of Commissioners, Weardale Mines are rated £2000 Duty in Forest Quarter in the Parish of Stanhope, and £1000 in each of the other three Quarters.
Below is the Quantity of Ore raised in one of those Quarters for five years
