Colonel Beaumont Portman Square, London

Dear Madam,

I wrote to you the 9th Inst. to which I refer you. This serves to advise you that I have this day drawn the several Bills payable to my Order at 30 Days Date (as at Foot) on R[ichar]d C. Glyn & Co. amounting to £1,800-0-0 on Account of Colonel Beaumont, being the Tradesmen’s Bills included in the Lead Pay, & likewise a Bill at 30 Days Date for the Bishop’s Dues amounting to £462-10-0 of which I advised you. R. Mulcaster returned from Mr Cockshutt’s on Saturday Evening & hope that your Works may receive great Improvements from their Observations in Derbyshire & particularly from the late view & Observations of your Agents. Mr Crawhall & Mr Emerson at the Mines and Works at Arkendale, which I understand that Mr Cockshutt intends visiting in his way North.

The Appeal Day for Darlington Ward will be on Saturday the 16th; Mr Heron is of Opinion that as he attended on the former Occasion, that it will be advisable that instead of his going with Thomas Crawhall, that Mr Losh should be desired to go; the Comm[issioner]s have calculated the Profits of the Weardale Mines on an Average of five years from 1788 to 1792 & make it considerably exceed £20,000 per annum: but only assess them at that Sum; now we calculate the Profits on an Average to be only £792-11-10 they do not appear to dispute the Quantity of Ore raised, that being sworn to by Mr Emerson, but they value the Ore on an Average of those years at £5 per Bing, whereas we take it from an accurate Calculation of Mr N. Walton of the Sales of Ore at Alstone Moor on an Average of those years to be only £4-4-0, now we really exceeded this Calculation in the Return that we made; I think that the Measure of appealing is highly proper, at the same Time I really do not expect to meet with any Relief; Should the Payment of this Tax be demanded ,~ I shall be under a Necessity of drawing on Messrs Glyn & Co. for the Amount, or near it as the Case may be; at any rate I think that it may be advisable to make the Appeal more particularly on Account of the Suit with the B[isho]p. The two long dated Bills that I mentioned in my former Letter are remitted to Messrs Glyn & Co. which is the whole I could send at present.

A Proposal has been made by Mr Jobling & some others (Justice Trevelyan being one of them I am told) for a Lease of a Piece of Ground at Grasswellrow near Ninebanks for working a Grove offering one-fifth for Dues; it adjoins Mr Ord’s Estate at Whitfield where that Company are working a very promising vein (as I am informed) which comes into your Property; on consulting with Mr Dickinson I declined treating with them; if they think it an Object to them, it will be more so to you on many Accounts.

      I am etc. J. E. B.

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
