Sir Thomas Blackett Barot Bretton Newcas 4th April 1778 near Wakefield Dear Sir I am told that Application has been made to one of the Owners of Winlaton Colliery to let his Share only; should any Application be made to you? I beg leave to recommend to you not on any Account to let separately being satisfied it is for the mutual Interest of yourself Mr Simpson & Mr Eyre to let jointly & I am informed that an unexceptionable person will make Proposals to take the whole which will I am satisfied be for the Interest of the joint Concern. As the Bishop of Durham has not thought proper to accept of your Proposal for the Renewal of a Life in the Lease of Weardale Leadmines I would recommend that in Case of any Overture from the Bishop that you do not now offer him more than Eight hundred Guineas; If he does not accept of these Terms I should in your Case be very easy about it for I am satisfied it is the utmost you shod give considering the present State of those Mines & the Certainty of a French War which will affect the Lead Trade very much. No more Lead can be got down to Blaydon till May, at present the Prospect of that Trade is very discouraging . I am with respect JEB
