Letter – Nicholas Walton to Thomas Simpson – 22 Mar 1741

      Ravensworth Castle. March 22nd . 1740

To Mr. Thos. Simpson



Sir

      We sent you some Advertizements giving Notice of the Peremptry day of Sale of the Derwentwater Woods, which I make no doubt but you took the Trouble to distribute, but as they are likely to be sold farr under the Valluations I am Obliged to give you fresh trouble about them. The Deputy Remembrancer has declared Mr Speedings the best bidder at £4100 - which is near £1000 under the valuation but as this Declaration cannot be Confirmed before the beginning of next Terme any persons may make farther proposalls. What I therefore desire of you is that you will send for Isaac <Todess> & Acquaint him with what has been offer’d, & if you can pursuade him or some other persons to make further proposalls, for it is a Shame these woods shou’d be sold so much under the real Value. We have not any design in this to hinder Mr Speedings from being purchasers provided they woud come near the Valuations; woud it not therefore be proper to give them two lines Acquainting them that you Apprehend further offers will be made. And that Unless they amend their proposal an Affadavit  will be lodged that the woods are Sold Under their Value which will Sett all aSide, If you Judge this proper pray write to them and Act  in it as is most for the Interest of the Hospitall, & if you find any Fresh proposalls are likely to be made pray Accquaint  Mr Radley with it, & you’ll Oblige Mr Boag and me who am

P.S. We have directions to make a fresh demand on Parson Jefferson, so that pray write to him that you have Orders to prosecute the Law against him if he does not Imediatly pay, & pray sue him if he does not.
