1823 June 12th. Wentworth came to announce his engagement to Miss Elizabeth Swinburne. 13. We all went to see the Swinburnes. 14. The Swinburnes came to call upon us. 17. We went to a small Party at <Kenthall> House. 22. Edward gazetted as Cornet in the 16th Hussars. 27 F. I went down to the Inn in Richmond Hill with Papa – 30. Richard comes down. 2 July Marie & Edward came down & we lunched on the Thames – a lovely delightful day – 4. I returned from Richmond – Sophy went there Su 6th. Sophy returned on account of her Cough & Marie went there. 11th. Papa & Marianne came up. 16th. Mama & I went to <Almacks> 17. Mama & I went to the Bachelors Ball – amusing but comical - <One> of the Lady Greys danced with <Conlon> the Opera <Dame> a Quadrille – 19. Henry came from Hoyland –
Diana Beaumont (1796-1872), the daughter of Mrs Diana, kept a journal for several years. It mostly consists of terse entries regarding who was visiting, and journeys they took, but some entries are of wider interest concerning important family events. The extracts given here concern the termination of TW Beaumont’s engagement to Elizabeth Swinburne. Rather than create a separate database entry for each day’s short entry they are grouped here into batches by calendar month, dated to the first entry in that month, and given for each month between June and November 1823.
