Letter – Diana Beaumont to Christopher Blackett – 26 Jan 1816

Copy of a Letter from Mrs. Beaumont to Chrr. Blackett Esq dated Bretton Hall 26 Jany. 1816 



Dear Sir,

Coll. Beaumont is complaining of the Gout & employs me to acknowledge the rect. of yr. favour of the 25th Inst. – He desires I will assure you that it will afford him the utmost satisfaction to serve any friend of yours, & shall really be glad of an opportunity of obliging Mr. Smith, he has not any acquaintance whatever with Lord Whitworth; & as a MP for an English County, he cannot, he says, ask a favour of a Ld. Lt. of Ireland, for it would be thought highly improper, but on his consulting Me on the subject, it immediately occurred to me that Mr. Peel, Ld. Ws. Sec[retar]y has frequently been at my balls &c in London, & Wentworth Beaumont is well acquainted with him, & his brother particularly so, who is much with us, & was staying with us at the Abbey & Allenheads, & for private friendships he could ask for the situation Mr. Smith is solicitous to obtain for Mr. <C.> O Reily, &  with every prospect of success, ‘tho Coll. Beaumonts application as a M.P. could not be attended to in Ireland, & Mr. Peel has more than the Ear of the Ld. Lt. that no time should be lost in your sending here the Age of Mr. O Reily, his situation & qualifications, if married, or single, what has been his profession &c. this will enable either my Son, or his Mother to do it effectually, Wenthwth. Beaumont is at present either at Ld. Mexburgh’s, or Bramham Park; we expect his return in a few days, & I am confident he will have great pleasure in serving Mr. Smith’s friend; we remain here until the 5 Feby. that I hope your answer will be received before we go forth, as my Son remains some time after us to hunt.
