Mr Coulson

      I perceive by yours of the 16 that you have some French wine to dispose off, I give you many thanks for giving me the preference but the ways being so very bad cannot get a hhd [hogshead] to Newby, so will stay till the New wines comes and the ways are better wth my Service to your Self & partners, I am

A wherry is a type of boat that was traditionally used for carrying cargo or passengers on rivers ... A wherry could be rowed by two men with long oars or by a single waterman using short oars or 'sculls'.

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates.
