Letter – Henry Richmond to Edward Collingwood – 26 Nov 1764

Sir       As I had some doubt whether the Deputy Stewards and the clerk’s were the same office, which the word or insirted between them in the draught seems to imply; I wrote to Mr Bell: & inclosed you have his answer, that they have always been considered as distinct offices. Therefore I submit it whether and should not be put in instead of or in the 17th Line of the 1st page and the 10th Line of the 2nd page of the draught.

As to what Mr Bell says about Mr Herons having a power to appoint a deputy Bailiff; it does not appear by Mr Ords appointment or any of the patents ever to have been granted; tho[ugh] he says it is necessary to have a deputy Bailif to pass surrenders out of court this I am no judge of. Nor of what he says about a deputy clerk. But desire you will please to consider these points and favour me with your answer and the return of the draught and Mr Bell’s Letter as soon as convenient and then I shall transmit them to Sir W[alte]r Blackett.

I suppose it is necessary for Mr & Mrs Rastal to execute tho[ugh] the appointment is only during the pleasure of Sir W[alte]r Blackett or the Lord or Lords of the Manor. Iam etc  HR
