Sir      I am glad you have got the Lead away from Allanheads Mill; & commend your diligence in hastening it & the other Lead along the road: the Weather and roads are now good & we must not lose any time, & I think, as Mr Reynaldson is now exerting himself in his department we shall not fail of getting the Lead to Markett, that I have sold & I hope a good Stock more.

   What you propose of smelting 1000 ps. of Lead from the Killhope Ore & sending them to Blaydon, I agree to, as all the other refineable Lead will probably not be sufficient Employment for the Refiners at Blaydon till next Spring.  P.S. I find the Lead marked RWB is refineable: therefore I desire you will let Assays be made of the several Sorts of ore it is composed of and send them to me to examine; to the End that if any of the Sorts of Ore are poorer than the rest they may be smelted by themselves. - 

  And I desire that for the future frequent Assays may be made of all the ores & the Assays sent down to me by the Post.                   I am etc    HR

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates.
