To Mr I Hunter at Dukesfield Newcastle 4 March 1763

Sir/ I desire you will enquire the first time you go to Allenh[ea]ds Mill the reason why 694 ¾ bings of Killhope Ore has yielded no more than 1570 pieces that is, 98 fothers, 2 pieces of Lead, this is no less than 7 Bings to a fother, & therefore there must be some great mismanagement or mistake either among the Grove or mill stewards & yet I have the above particulars fm Mr Crawhall, in his acct. of the produce & smeltings last year, without his taking any notice of the bad quality of the ore. I desire you will let me know whe[the]r Sir Walter’s Estate at Steel has ever enjoyed any right of Comon upon Bulbeck Comon & whe[the]r Dukesfield Lead Mill is entitled to turn horses or Cattle thereon.

I hope all the family is well & am etc HR

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
