To Mr John Cross in Leeds Newcas[tle] 6th April 1764 Yorkshire Sir I received your Letter of the 3 [rd] inst[an]t ; and thank you for your punctuality about the Endorsements on Sir W[alte]rs Bond to Mr Fenwick and on his Assignm[en]t thereof to Mr Ward. Your taking so much trouble in the affair has removed one part of Mr Fenwicks difficulty. But I think he cannot remove the other part without coming to Newcastle himself to receive the Money. For he writes me that Mr Hull cannot give him Cash for his draught on me and therefore he expects I will send him Bills on London. But I do not look upon this as an advisable step. For besides the Endorsem[en]t ( wch you know will remain with Mr Ward ) it is necessary that before I part with the Money I should have a Receipt or Letter of Advice, specifying upon what acco[un]t the Money is paid[.] Now it would be very awkward if after Mr Fenwick has got my Bills he should send a Letter of Advice that did not express this properly. For then Sir Walter would not have a Sufficient discharge, neither should I have a sufficient voucher to my Acco[un]t. And what is worse Mr Fenwick perhaps would not be very anxious about satisfying us after his own turn was served. However, I do not see any Reason why any such Risk should be run & therefore have wrote him that the Money will be ready for him here on the 12th of May. Sir Walter is very well. I am etc H R
