To Mr John Grey Attorney at Law Newcas. 20 Augst. 1771 Berwick upon Tweed Sir The Road from Scrammerston etc through Unthank and Middle Ord & West Ord into Scotland was always represented by the late Mr Wm. Robson Mr Geo: Douglass and others as a private Road; & consistently with that Notion Sir Walter Blackett covenanted with his Lessees of Unthank Colliery to repair the same - but those Lessees having now other Objects in view, by being become the Lessees of Scramerston Colliery they refuse to pay the Acknowledgement which they formerly alledged was customarily paid for passing that road & have helped the Agents of Greenwich Hospital to the Testimonies of some Old Witnesses to prove its being a public Road. Sir Walter being desirous of knowing in what Light he is to view this Road bids me write you to collect the old people of that Neighbourhood that can speak to the Use of that Road & examine them as to what Obstruction has at any time been given to people passing that Way and whether any Acknowledgements have at any Time been paid for allowing them to pass.
