To Richard Wilson Esq[ui]re in Leeds Newcastle 9th May 1766 Yorkshire Sir Inclosed is Joseph Kings bill on Kenton Brown and son for two hundred and seventy eight pounds nine shillings and ten pence for the balance of my account of your half years rents due Martin[ma]s last of which account I have here sent you two parts along with Mrs H. Headlam’s receipt for her int[e]r[est. I desire you will please to advise the receipt of the above bill by the return of the post and that you will sign and return me a duplicate of the account and mention the receipt of Mrs Headlams receipt. I find Mr Shafto of Benwell has locked up a way which has immemorially, as I have been told, been a public bridle road; and runs across from the Stannerton road near Slatyford to the great Carlisle road. He offered a Key of the Gate to Mr King who has refused it, and tells me it is your int[e]r[es]t to have this road preserved; and I am clearly of his opinion. What evidence can be collected to support the public right I cannot yet tell; but I hear one Pearson, who has been stoppd, and who is a man of spirit, is determined to try Mr Shafto ; and has been collecting what the old people can say upon the subject. I hope to see him soon and to learn what he has gathered from them, and then if you think proper will speak to Mr Shafto.
