To Mr Thomas Maughan at Newhouse Newcas. 14th June 1771 in Weardale Sir The Bishop of Durham died on Sunday last *, & tho I have no better nor earlier Intelligence of it than the Newspapers yet I think proper to send you this Accot. by way of Dukesfield that before you set off for this place w[hi]ch by your Letter of the 8th instant you say you will do on Monday or Tuesday next you may give the Directions I desired you to do at your own Groves & to Mr Westgarth & Mr Hunter for Kilhope & Wolfcleugh. You will take care and desire them to do so too that the Ore which was severed from the Mine after Sunday last may be distinguished as far as possible & reserved at the Grove till a Treaty for Composition or payment in kind to the new Bishop is settled - the rest of the Ore, that is, what has been got before Sunday last must be got drawn & washed up & sent away to the Mills with all Expedition.
