To Mr Thos Wilson Merchant in Norfolk Street London Newca[stle] 2d April 1768

Sir

Sir Walter Blackett has sent me your Letter, to him, about Lead & bid me answer it.

Sir Walter has two Sorts of Lead – refined which I now sell at £15 a fother & Common at £14 15s 0d. Our fother consists of 21 cwt of 112 lb each. As to Litharge it is sold by the Ton of 20 cwt and the present price is £14 10s 0d. I should be very ready to execute your commissions for Lead & Litharge if it was consistent for me to act both as Byer & Seller. I always avoid it when Application is made to me, refer to our Lead Merchants here – the principal of whom are Mr Jonathan Sorsbie Wm Peareth Esqr Matt Waters Esqr Mr Thos Airey Aubone Surtees Esqr Mr Ralph Carr & Co Edward Mosley our present Mayor. I must therefore beg leave to refer to one of them, even for an Acco[un]t of the Charges and Commission as I am not certain what they are: & can only say that I shall sell to which ever of them you employ upon as reasonable Terms as the Markett will afford. I am etc HR

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
