To Sir Wr Blackett Bt. M.P. in half Moon Street Newcas. 16th April 1771 Piccadilly, London Honrd. Sir Inclosed is Mr Thos. Gills Letter - what I have learnt about him is, that partly from want of Capital and Business , & partly from his Intimacy with Mr Storey the Tanner & others of that Stamp he failed. that since his failure he has behaved well - & while Captn Boves was here was his Clerk - but is now out of bread - & that what he says about his Father is true. I do not know him, nor how a Letter can be directed to him; but find he frequently dines at Mr Thos. Moor’s - a public house in the Close - if a Letter is inclosed to me I shall Endeavour to find him out. It is said the Trinity house Address to the Lord Mayor is sent to Mr Grieve and that he is wait upon you & Mr Ridley with it and desire you will Carry it to the Tower - & if you refuse he is to wait on Aldn. Stephenson with it, whose readiness they do not doubt. It is far from being considered here as a respectable address - most of the brethren being absent, it is said; and all their Comon freemen being summoned to meet on the occasion. Last Night we had a very severe frost, & to day have had a great deal of wind and snow - so that old people agree they do not remember so bad Weather at this Season. It would certainly be a prudent unexceptionable Measure in the Legislature to allow Rice, at least, to be imported from the plantations Duty free. I am etc HR
