To Sir W[alte]r Blackett B[arone]t MP in half moon street Piccadilly London Newcas[tle] 26th March 1766 Hon[ou]rd Sir Grand the Deserter married John Ogle’s neice, and if he should come into this part of the country case will be taken of him. I cannot yet learn whether George Spain, who is now at sea is a freeman of this corporation, but he has a good character and is deserving of either of the places he applys for. I remember he behaved very well at the last Election for the County of Durham tho’ much teased by the other party. Thomas Snowball is brother to John Snowball the mason at Wallington and is one of the watchmen in the Custom house of which place he makes about £20 a year. He has a very good character writes well and knows figures- he is a Widower of near 40 and has four children. Mr Chris[tophe]r Johnson now writes that the Guardians of the Infant heir at Law of Dr Smith have consented to the said Infants’ surrendering Woodcroft Copyhold and says it may be expected this affair will be completed on or before the 10th of next month. He also writes that the fine to the Lord for this copyhold estate on the death of his tenant is six shillings & eight pence. I am etc HR
