To Mr Wm. Dalton at Blaydon                                                      Newcastle 27th August 1763

Sir/ Mr Renaldson having told me this moment of the sinking of piles of Lead upon L[or]d Widdrington’s  Key about 4 feet; it has made me very uneasy & very apprehensive of the consequences; the expence of shifting the Lead & all the inconvenience that can attend the doing it; is very trifling compared with the loss that will fall upon Sir Walter Blackett & the blame that will upon every one concerned if the Key should give way & the Lead fall into the river & therefore as the Lead is weighed to you I desire you will not neglect to do what you think is safest without loss of time. P.S. I shall be so engaged Monday & Tuesday that I cannot possibly come up but my coming is not necessary for you and Mr Renaldson can judge better as you know the Key, than I can do if I was to spend a week with you. I am etc HR

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale.
