Mr Darwin - No 47 Hatton Street London Newcastle 13th June 1775

Sir

The Commissioners appointed by the Act of Parliament have had one Sitting for Examining Witnesses touching the disputed Ground between Blanchland & Hexham & have adjourned to the 24th of next month when they will finish the Parole Evidence on both Sides; After that they will adjourn to some subsequent day when such written Testimony as each side can offer must be produced.

From such Copies of Grants as I have it seems as if something might be had to prove that the disputed ground or great part of it lies within the Manor of Hexham; but this opinion of mine I shall communicate to Mr Heron in a little time - What I could wish to know from you at present is - Whether you have any Office Copy of the Arch Bishop of Yorks Grant (Inter alia) to Henry the 8th ( dated 14th March in the 36 Year of his Reign) of the Manor of Hexham with its Members & Appurt[nance]s & whether you have the Original Grant from Queen Elizh to Sir John Forster dated 12 April 1579 of the Spirituallity in Hexham & Hexhamshire & whether you have the original or an office Copy of King Charleā€™s Grant to Sir John Heydon & others of the Manor of Hexham & also whether you have the Original Grant dated 20th Novemr 1632 from the said Sir John Heydon and others to Sir John Fenwick of the aforesaid Manor of Hexham with all its Members etc - Such of these particulars as you have you will please to Express & those you have not whether you can procure in Case they should be thought necessary to be exhibited to the Commissioners - It is possible this Business if agreeable to you, may occasion you a Journey to Newcastle I am etc HR

P.S. wrote Mr Darwin to send, 4 dozen <lb> of the best Tallow Mould Candles, by Sea.

A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
