Letter – Henry Richmond to William Darwin – 25 May 1772

Sir

	 I duly received your Letter inclosing the Case & Sir Ralph Milbanks Letter about the Tithes of Bullister Bush, which I have communicated to Sir Walter & he will wait Sir Ralphs coming into the Country.   Sir Walter desires you will give either to Sir Edward Blackett or Mr Totton two Guineas for one Mrs. Bayly a Clergymans Daughter.  & that you will give to Mary <Massie> the writer of the inclosed Letter, something to relieve her according as you may see occasion - he leaves the sum to your discretion - The waste My Brother has made of fortune & Character grieves me much ; & what adds to it is the finding out he is still <preserving> his labours; having made applications lately to the <Comtee> of the Customs about that for measuring Keels - a Thing I find not approved of, as a practical method by the people in the Trade; tho they admit it ingenious - neither do the Gentlemen in the Counties countenance it, tho they are Civil in their Answers.  His Longitude Schemes are Chimeras; he never mentioned them to me, but those to whom he has I <conceive> such of them as are Judges & honest, say they are vain.

PS.  Sir Walter continues still in the same way as when Sir John Trevelyan left him.  A good night relieves him but it only seems now & then                               I am etc           HR
