Letter – Henry Richmond to William Darwin – 30 Dec 1768

To Mr Darwin Greys Inn London                                                     Newca[stle] 30th Decem 1768

Sir

I am very glad the Conveyance of E[as]t Kenton is at last finished, and the difficulties obviated that were raised about the bonds – I forgot in my last Letter to acquaint you that Mr Wilson passed my Acco[un]t without making any objection to the £1 6s 8d you charged for the trouble of paying the intrest to the Mortgagees; so I have given you Credit for that Sum in the Acco[un]t between us.

It appears to me by the Abstract of the patents, which you have sent me, that Sr Wr Blackett may probably make our a Title to the Tithes of Rothley, as purchasor under the Crown; without going back to the Cistercian Monks for it. The patent of 38 Hen 8 grants the Tithes to L[or]d Eure and his heirs Male & That of 15 James 1 grants them to his descendant the then L[or]d Eure his heirs and assigns reciting the former grant. This L[or]d Eure sold the Manor or L[or]ds[hi]p of Rothley with its Appurt[enance]s to Sr Jno Fenwick w[hi]ch Manor & prem[es]es King Hen the 8th by Letters patent dated 26th Janry 36th of his reign granted to L[or]d Eure his Ancestor as aforesaid at 16s 8d a year rent. The sd L[or]d Eure, the descendant, declares that he holds the prem[es]es by grant from the then King dated 5th July 15 of his reign by the rent above mentioned & then Conveys all other the Messuages Lands Tenements rents Reversions Services and Hereditaments belonging to him in Rothley. This feefarm Rent of 16s 8d is paid at this day by Sir Walter. And tho’ among the general Words in the Bargain and Sale of the prem[es]es as above mentioned dated 17 Augst 16th James 1st there does not appear, by the Abstract I have, to be any mention of Tithes yet I sho[ul]d hope the Recitals of the patents, and the Word Hereditaments in the said Bargain and Sale will Convey the Tithes But this I submit to the Judgement you shall form of the Matter when you have perused the Conveyance itself and the other Title Deeds of Rothley which I suppose are all in Mortgage to Mr Savage along with those of Wallington.
