Letter – Henry Richmond to William Darwin – 6 Aug 1770

To  Mr Darwin   Grays Inn  London                                            Newcas.   6th Augst. 1770



Sir      I think General Clavering must mistake the Term for which Sir Walter Blackett promised that the Tithes of Dotland Comon should not be taken up  -  he says 12 years - but Sir Walter  gave me, several years ago, a Memorandum he had made about this Matter; wch. is in the following words “Novr. 19. 1759 - This day promised Coll. Clavering that if I live till the Expiration of the seven years for which Term the Lands which are to be divided at Dotland are to be tithe free I will then for an Acknowledgement only let the proprietors have their Tithes for three years,”   I do not know where to write to Sir Wr. now so shall wait till I hear from him for I suppose he will leave Spa this day.

     It would have been more Conformable to the Instructions given William Hall if he had hired another horse & gone after the Duchess of Portland to Plymouth - but I hope an Answer to Sir Walter’s Letter will come to you in Course by the post, otherwise I shall not know what to do - if he should want Money to bring him home, after he has got the Answer, you will please to supply him & if you send me his receipt I will give you Credit for it in our Account.   At the time I am writing this I hope you will have reced, as you desire, the bills for the Intrst. and the quarterly payments.  As, by your Letter, I find you will be in Town till the 18 instant I shall send you the Deeds which you sent down to make out the Woodcroft Title but which were reserved as relating also to Winlaton.  they will be sent by the Fly Coach that sets out on Wednesday Morning next & will arrive at the George and Blue Boar Holbourn on Friday Evening or Saturday morning.  I shall pay the Carriage,

     I shall give my Brother as soon as I see him < F   > White’s Bond & <Anth  > Hunters Assignment of it to Sir Wr.  which I reced. in your Letter by this post.              & am etc    HR
