Letter – Henry Richmond to William Darwin – 7 Nov 1769

To Mr Darwin Grays Inn London                                                            Newca[stle] 7 Novr 1769

Sir

I hope this will find you replaced & well in your chambers in Greys Inn

Inclosed I send you Bell & Cos bill on Glynn & Co for Two hundred and Eighty pounds, payable 20 days after 30 ult[im]o which I intend for the quarterly payments to 31st Decemr next; and you will please to send me for it the usual receipt to be a voucher to my Acco[un]t with Sir Walter Blackett.

Inclosed also is another Bill of Bell & Cos on Glyn & Co for Twenty one pounds, payable at 30 days from this day, which you will please to place to my Acco[un]t for the present. it is designed to answer a demand which will be made on you, soon after Chr[ist]mas, by Mrs J Sorsbie for her Year’s Allowance, then due to her from Sir Walter.

We are anxious to know what is like to be determined on about Sir Ed Winnington’s Money – Sir Walter, who is gone this morning to Wallington, has no objection to its being paid any day in Janry after the 10th as your Clerk mentioned; and supposed the 18th might do, if it can be fixed so with Mr Savage’s Approbation.

You have the Title deeds of Hexham; which I desire you will look among for some papers & an Award relating to Sams Island. The Award I desire you will send me a Copy of & if  you find any thing material in the papers relative to the following Matters I would have an Extract or Copy as you think proper. The Matter is a Demand the Com[missioner]s of Greenwich hospital are making for Satisfaction for some Wood cut by Sir Walter on the quarter of this Island allotted by the said award to the Dilston family – Alledging that as he pays then 40s a Year for this Island, which must be for their quar[ter] part he can have no right to the Wood there except he has it by some deed. Now we want to know how this 40s a Year has become payable to them. I see it has been paid ever since old Sir Wm Blackett bought Hexham & find that this family has enjoyed the whole Island during all the time of Memory, but by what tenure nothing that we have here can shew. I should be very glad, after you have considered of the papers you may meet with, to have your Opinion of the Matter & what answer should be given to the demand. P.S. Old Mr Widdrington partn[e]r with my Bro[the]r is dead. I am etc    HR
