To Mr. William Hutchinson Newcastle 14 January 1764 Attorney at Law Bernard Castle Sir I wish Mr Bowes had desired any Gentleman of the Law to call upon me at first it wo[ul]d have saved much trouble at once have made the matter more intelligible than by Lre. As to the 170 wch you now inquire after, the note of it appears to be Mr Bowes’s own writing but the Receipt is Mr Maughans writing who is Grove Steward to Sir W[alte]r Blackett & Mr Bowes has signed this Receipt w[hi]ch Mr Maughan has witnessed. The note in this state was brought hither by one Robt Loftus who said he was Servant to Mr Bowes & I paid him the money & made him witness to the receiving of it. As I found he was not ready at counting Portugal Gold I put down upon a piece of paper the several species wch up the £170 & wrote the following words at the Bottom of it “ Mr R Loftus for Mr Bowes as to Receipt” this paper I happened to put into the article for the purchase of the Wood, where I found it when the first questions were asked about this matter. Mr Bowes told me that my testimony wo[ul]d be wanted if so, I hope you will contrive to give me all the notice you can of the day & that you will make my attendance upon the Com[missio]n as short as possible for Sir W[alte]rs business now will scarce admit of my absence.
