Dear Madam

      I am favoured with your Letter of the 17th.  inst. & am glad that you & Colonel Beaumont approve of what has been done respecting the Lending Money for the Workmen; I am in hopes that on the whole that it may not be attended with any Loss to the Concern, but their Manner of obtaining it, was unjustifiable & highly improper, and what must be discouraged as much as possible ; the Workmen returned quietly to work on the 9th. inst. The Lead Stewards are with me at present for the Lending Money for the two Months which for the several Mines & Lead Mills, with some Wood Payments amounts to £4650 –  – 

      In Weardale the Mines of Breckonsyke & Puddenthorn are doing very well, the rest of the Workings are but indifferent; At Allenheads they are raising Ore very well at a Floot lately discovered, the rest of the Works are not very productive at present, but are in a promising Way.   Both high & low Coalcleugh are poor. –

      At the foot you have an Account of the Sales that I have lately made; in small Quantities I am selling at £23 -5 - & £23.10. p[er] Fo[dde]r.      Litharge £24 the Tone – I wrote to you the 17th. inst. to which I refer you. – The Packages from London are arrived & will be forwarded by the Carrier to the Abbey on Friday.

      I go into the North on some Business tomorrow and turn by back on the races and all the Gaities of the Week.   I am &c. J.E.B
