Mr. Bell Newcastle 14th. March 1801

Hexham Abbey

Dear Sir

The enclosed was sent me by Colonel Beaumont, and he wishes that what Mr. Bowns recommends may be carried into Execution; should you find any Objection to the Mode of proceeding, you will please to mention it. – Coln. Beaumont likewise desires that what I mentioned to you in a former Letter respecting your preparing a proper Bond for £900. – at 5 pr. Ct. dated 1st. Jan.y last, for Mr. Isaac Hunter to execute, may be immediately done by you, and that you will get it executed.-

On Enquiry of Mr. Walton he informs me that G.[reenwich] Hospital do not pay more than 18d. p[er] day for Labourers, but as Hexham is rather a dear place, I hope that your Labourers will be satisfied with 20d pr. Day.-

As the Lead from Allen Mill will now be coming down very fast (and possibly some from Dukesfield) and the Lead now at Hexham lays in a very loose Manner, you are desired to give Directions that the Lead Yard at the Abbey may be got ready as soon as may be, for the Reception of the Lead.

      I am &c. J.E.B.

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
