Sir Thomas Blackett Bart. Newcastle Augt 28th 1785

Bretton - Yorkshire

Dear Sir I wrote to you the 21st inst. to wch I refer you. Mr Stephenson of Hull (who is Concerned for the Greater part of the Lead Proprietors in Derbyshire & Yorkshire) has been at this place, & I have had a good deal of discourse with him respecting an Application to Parliament for the Purpose of Obtaining a Repeal of the late Duty on Lead wch is very oppressive to the Lead Trade of this Country and likely to be more so, Mr Stephenson has taken a great deal of Pains, & has made himself Master of the Subject he has Corresponded with the Minister, & has no doubt of succeeding in Case the Lead Interest of the Kingdom join in the Application; There is to be a General Meeting of the Proprietors or their Agents of the Derbyshire & Yorkshire Mines, as well as some of the Exporters, at Middleham the second week in Septr. of wch Mr Stephenson is to give me more full Information.

As this is a Matter of great Moment to the Lead Owners, I think that you or some Person Concerned for you, who is acquainted with the Trade, should Attend the Meeting.

I shall be glad to know your Sentiments on the Matter & should you think it Necessary I will go the Meeting. Please to favour me with your Answer. I am etc J. E. Blackett

P.S. The Duty of £2.5.0 4/20 on Lead Exported not only Acts as a Bounty to the Scotch Duty free Lead, but is a great Encouragement to the Working the Lead Mines in Germany.

The Dukesfield Smelters and Carriers Project aimed to celebrate and discover the heritage of the Dukesfield Arches & lead carriers' routes between Blaydon and the lead mines of Allendale and Weardale. A two year community project, it was led by the Friends of the North Pennines in partnership with Hexhamshire and Slaley Parish Councils and the active support of Allendale Estates. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generous support of other sponsors. Friends of the North Pennines: Charity No:1137467
