Colonel Beaumont Newcastle 12th. Jan.y 1802 Bretton, Wakefield Yorkshire Dr. Sir I was favoured with your Letter of the 5th. inst. enclosing Letters from Merchant School Master & Loftus Clerk of the Races; the former I beleive is an American by birth, he some time ago made Application to me on his Subscriptions having fallen off, but I declined subscribing on Account of the Number of Charity & Sunday Schools at this Place; he appeared to be a sensible, clever Man in his Line; he has a large Family & I believe is in distressed Circumstances; Mr. Fishwick who is his chief Support at present, is at the Head of the Anabaptists at this Place. It does not appear that Mr. C. Grey is a Subscriber to the Gold Cup, & you not being engaged on the Turf, I have acquainted Mr. Loftus that you are declined subscribing.- I observe what you say respecting your Friend Mr. Bosville, who I am sorry to hear is so much indisposed; his usual Set of Company at Dinner will not help to make him better; when the Weather will admit of it I will employ the same Person who is to value your Estate, to value Mr. Bosville’s, but it will be necessary that Mr. Bosville should acquaint Mr. <J> Bell with ye. same We have a severe Frost with a deep Snow, & this day it has scarce ceased falling.- I have sent the Bishops Agent Mr. Emm a Bill for £195 – 16 – 7 for the renewal of the Leases of Kilhope & Welhope with Lintzgarth and the Charges thereon, & likewise the Certificates, with the Name of the new Life & I expect soon to receive the new Leases. – Thos. Crawhall went on Sunday last with Subsistence Money for the Workmen of the several Mines and Lead Mills; a short time since a vein of Ore 2 ½ Feet was cut in the Property of Greenwich Hospital by a Company, but unfortunately it is at the Distance of two Miles from your Property; as Mr. Bowns has wrote to Mr. Bell on the Subject of Hexham Mill it is not necessary for me to say more on that Business.- I was favoured with Mrs. Beaumonts Letter of the 9th. inst. for which I am much obliged to her; as I was writing to you I would not give her the trouble of a Letter. I am &c. J.E.B.
