Letter – John Watson to John Pattison – 22 Aug 1733

      Articles of Agreement had made Concluded & fully Agreed upon by and between John Watson of <Goswick> in the County of Durham Esqr. his Maj[esty]s Receiver of the Rents for the Estate late James Earl of Derwentwater of the one part and John Pattison of Unthank in the County  of Northumberland  Gent. & John Ridley of Park end in the said County of Northumberland  Husbandman of the other part this Twenty second day of August in the Y[ea]r of our Lord One Thousand Seven hundred & Thirty Three. 

      First the Said John Watson for the Considerations hereinafter mentioned hath bargained and sold and by the presents doth bargaine & Sell unto them the afores[ai]d  John Pattison and John Ridley their Execu[to]rs Adm[inistrator]s & Assignes. All that p[ar]cell of Timber now lying Cutt in those parts of his Majesties Estate Called Harsondale, Plankey and Silleywray together with all the Topps & Loppings thereof. In Consideration whereof they the Said John Pattison & John Ridley doe hereby Covenant promise & agree to & with the said John Watson to pay the Sum of three Hundred pounds in Manner following (that is to say) The Sum of Two hundred  & Sixty pounds in lieu  & Satisfaction of the quantity of Two hundred & forty Tunns or thereabout & the Sum of Forty pounds for the Topps & Branches of the Said Timber at the days and times herein after mentioned the sum of One hundred & Fifty pounds at the Feast of St Michael in the Year of our Lord One Thousand  Seven hundred & Thirty four & the Sum of one hundred & fifty pounds on the first day of August then next following & which will be in the year of our Lord God One Thousand Seven Hundred Thirty & five. 

      And the said John Watson doth hereby Covenant and agree to and with the said John Pattison and John Ridley that they shall at any time within the space of Six Years peaceably and quietly remove the said Timber from off the premisses and have liberty to Cutt Ground and make plain any part of the said premisses for the Convenience of the taking away the the said Timber and Also Shall have free liberty to Cast Turffs raise Dust and bujild Cabbins on the Said premisses at any time within the Space of Six years aforesaid for burning all or any part of the said Wood to Charcoale. 

      And the said John Watson doth further agree that if the said John  Pattinson & John Ridley lose by the Bargaine aforesaid Upon making it appear they shall have Allowed them in Consideration of such losses the quantity of Six Tuns of Oak Timber now Growing in the said Grounds provided Always that if the Agreement Aforesaid be with the Consent & Approbation of his Majestys Lords of the Treasury then these presents to Stand good, if the Lords aforesaid disagree thereto then to be of No Effect to all Intents & purposes. In Witness whereof the said Parties to these presents have Interchangeably Sett their hands & Seals the day & year first within mentioned .
