To Richard Ellis at Hexham [Newcastle] 17 April 1761 Sir I am glad you have got Allendale tithes let, I think you have let them well. Sir Walter having given Mr Widdrington orders to file a bill against the people that grind from the mils, he will write to you to know whose names you think proper to mention, & I should hope on your acquainting them with Sir Walters resolution that they will submit without putting him or themselves to any trouble or expence, Sir Walter has also given orders to file a bill against the people that withhold their tithes, you are the best judge whether the custom of tithing in the parish of Hexham can be supported, or you think they will make any defence or would in my opinion be right to acquaint them what is intended, as I hope they will also submit & prevent any further proceedings, Mr Widdrington has all the papers ever had relating to these matters, so you will please to correspond with him about them.
