      I am honored with your Letter from Thorpe and have seen Mr Thomas respecting the advertisement for <preserving> the Game which will be inserted in the Papers of this week. We have considered that, putting it in any other form than that usually adopted might in a degree be detrimental to Col Beaumont’s Interest as member for the County, and also occasion invidious remarks from the many who are ever eager to make any circumstances the vehicle of malice. I have already announced and shall take every opportunity to make known Mr Wentworth Beaumont’s intention to commence shooting this year and on that account it is extremely desirable the Game may be preserved as much as possible. Mr Walton may be informed of this & Mr Wilson I apprehend will not go to the Moors til after the Assize week. When at Allenheads I gave directions to Matthew Lee strictly to watch the Moors, which MrThomas had previously ordered and appointed another person to assist him . The Game has multiplied very much this season which has proved an extremely one & I sincerely hope Mr Beaumonts first essay will make him a keen and expert Sportsman. Lee is amply supplied with Guns etc and a Box fom London has been delivered here which by its appearance I conjecture to contain another Gun. The Route from Thirsk to Hexham is to Borrobridge. Leeming Land, Auckland and Allensford where Horses will be sent from Hexham when ordered. The <Fume> is shipped for Bretton and if not now arrived ought to be near its destination; Some Spar has been collected at Allenheads and will be forwarded so soon as sufficient is obtained. A dividend of about four shillings in the Pound upon Surtees Burdon & Co effects is expected in two or three months. Messrs Walkers Maltby & Co have this day bought 5000 P[iece]s WB Common @ £28 per fo[dder] & 100 Casks of Litharge @£30 per Ton
