Mrs Beaumont Newcastle 24 October 1807 Address to Col Beaumont Bretton I received Mr Bowns’s Letter on Tuesday and in my way to Hexham on Wednesday morning to meet Mr Williamson at the Manor Court; I called upon Mr C Blackett at Wylam to fix the earliest day for going over to Auckland. Yesterday we waited upon the Bishop and communicating to his Lordship the substance of Mr Bowns’s Letter He decidedly objected to the <Fine> for the removal of the Life being left to the judgement of those Gentlemen who might be appointed to determine the other matters in difference, adhering as formerly, to its being distinct in every respect and moderate in the amounts. I then requested to know if his Lordship would be disposed to refer the Suit and permit the business of the renewal for the present to remain undetermined to which he replied, that he had no objection upon these grounds that the friend of Col Beaumont should meet his friend in London attended by the Solicitors of each authorised to call for every Paper necessary for their information*, but in so doing he did not consider himself pledged to confirm himself to the moderate sum of £15,000 for the Renewal. His Lordship’s conversation after this turned upon the consciousness of his own moderation of the interests of Col Beaumont in acceding of his accurate knowledge of the whole Business and the certainty of the Chancellor’s decision leading to consequences extremely disastrous to Col Beaumont. His Lordship hinting at the delay and the necessity (the term commencing on the 6th of next month) of an instantaneous determination; after taken our leave I determined to put myself into a Stage Coach for the purpose of receiving your command at Bretton. I am etc MM *That upon their joint recommendation of such terms of accommodation Col Beaumont & Himself should be at liberty to determine.
