James Cockshutt Esq Newcastle 19 September 1808 Huthwait near Barnsley Yorkshire Since your departure from this place I have rec[eive]d the Weardale Leases from London, for the purpose of having them surrendered and obtaining others, which on the insertion of a new Life becomes necessary, and on referring to Sir Thomas Blackett’s will it is there stated that these Mines are bequeathed to Mr John Cockshutt in Trust for the purposes thereinmentioned and hence it becomes indispensible that the Leases sh[oul]d be made out in your name, as his heir at Law, provided no other appointment was made by him with regard to this Trust. I have desired Mr Griffiths attorney at Law Durham to write to you for such information on this subject as he may require, and who will at proper time forward the Leases deed of Surrender and declaration of Trust for your Signature & I am certain no time will be lost by you in writing to Mr Griffiths when you know that under the present Leases Col & Mrs Beaumonts Interest in the Mines is insecure and in the event of the Bishop’s death before the new Leases are executed that his successor might insist & no doubt would demand the Fine already paid for the Life now to be inserted. I am Dear Sir etc MM
