Ravensworth Castle Janry 21 . 1738/9 To Mr Benja Shutt Dr Sir I have this day drawn upon you three Bills undermentioned for the value of which have accounted to Sir hen: Liddell Bart. Here therefore Charge them to his accot. viz One bill dated this day payable to Mr James Wood for £15 at 10 days date £15 One bill dated this day payable to Mr John Maule for 10 Guineas on Demand £10.10 One Bill dated this day payable to Mr James Willock for 5 Guineas on demand £5. 5 £30.15.0 Our Quietus for the accot. settled when Mr Boag was last in London is now we expect ready, therefore we desire you will wait upon Mr Hunter, and pay him Eighteen Guineas the expence of passing it and that sum what you last year laid out for Mr Boag and me pray Charge in your accot. with Sir Hen: Liddell bart. as it shall be accounted for here on Receipt of yours acquainting me that you have so charged it. Most of the Bluestone Mills in London are as we are informed altered that is the Blue Stones which formerly were in use are taken off and instead thereof French Stones laid upon their Mills: now as we have at present occasion for a pair of Blue Stones we desire you will Enquire if a pair casten good ones are to be had four foot 6 inches Diameter at a reasonable rate, but if not pray buy us a pair of new Blew Stones of that size which we reckon will cost about £15 a pair as <the> price here is £16. You may probably be assisted in the Choice of em by a professed Miller both as to now or old and particularly in the price and goodness of the old casten ones. Sir Henry Liddell, 4th Bt. of Ravensworth Castle was created Baron Ravensworth in 1747. He was Whig MP for Morpeth at the time of this letter, and a founder member of the ‘Grand Alliance’ cartel of colliery owner with his uncle Colonel George Liddell of Eslington. Nicholas Walton had been Sir Henry’s agent at Ravensworth Castle before his appointment as Greenwich Hospital Receiver.
