Cuthbert Constable, of Burton Constable Hall in East Yorkshire, inherited from Lady Mary Radcliffe the income from a mortgage for £5900 of Spindlestone and Outchester which she had acquired in a Radcliffe family settlement in 1692. This remained payable from the Derwentwater estate after its transfer to the Greenwich Hospital. The Hospital trustees were anxious to divest the estate of this and other Radcliffe encumbrances.
