Ravensworth Castle April 13th 1740 A coppy of this Letter sent Mr. Maule To Jas. Hunter Esqr. Sir We have reced. from Mr Maul the Form of an accot. in which shape he informs us you are pleased to direct ours to be made out for the year 1738 & to carry the Receivings forward to the 30th June 1739. This Sir we have considered in the best manner we can, & cannot be of oppinion if it will be right for us or Consistant with our Trust to carry on the receivings to so great a Length beyond wch the rents are Carried and it will in the Case sometimes Happen that a Rent due from a good payer at mayday may be reced. before the 30th June wch would make an Inconsistency not to be gott over but by leaving out such a sum as should be so reced. & by that means our receivings as they wou’d then stand in the face of the accot. wou’d disagree wth our cash accot. which we send Monthly to the Board which by no means must be, and besides Sir as it appears to us it wou’d look mighty Odd that at a time when we Settle the accot. there shou’d be rents realy due & not return’d in Arrear. Upon the whole therefore we desire you will allow the accot. to Stand in the Shape it was made up by us with this addition that all the arrears be p’ticularly putt down in the manner you have directed on the face of the Acct. after the Disbursments are Ended. We will take care Sir to draw the Arrears at all times into as narrow a Compas as we can & to do every thing in that shape wch is most agreeable to you, & we hope you will Comply with this our request & excuse the freedom of giving you our Sentim<en>ts upon it. We have wrote to Mr Maul & desired him to wait upon you for your Approbation after wch we expect he will give us a Line that we may proceed to make a proper Affadavit and send it a well as the last years acct. to the Board for we are ashamed they shou’d be so long of Settling & are Sir Yrs &c Nich.
