Letter – Nicholas Walton to John King – 31 Mar 1738

To Mr John King 						Ravensworth Castle   March 31. 1738



Sr

	We have represented to the Hospitall the case of Mr Jeferson of Cockermouth having sold and recd. for some Birch and Alder Trees cutt upon his arbitrary estate in the manner of Thornthwait and in answer thereto we are commanded to State a Case and lay it before Councel for an opinion whether the Tennants of that Estate have a right to cut down Timber at their will and Pleasure or not, and in case it is the opinion of Counsell that they have no right, then to be advised what methods to take to doe the Hospitall Justice. Now as the Court keeper of the Manner is the proper person to State this case, we desire you may do it on rect. of this, and meet us with it at Alston, on Thursday Evening the 6th of April next, but we desire you may in your way call upon Mr Simpson and take his joynt Thoughts with yours as to the manner of Stating the Case and have wrote to him this day to desire he will joyn with you in stating the case and we dare say he will most readily do it. He has a concern in and knows the Customs of the Estates in Cumberland, so that he is the most proper Person to be advised with. At our meeting at Alston, we shall be prepared to Settle with you the Afaire of the Court keeping, which is the chief view of desiring you to meet us there, as the State of the case above mentioned might have been transmitted to us by post.
