Letter – Nicholas Walton to John Maule – 30 May 1737

To Mr John Maule

                                                                            Ravensworth Castle  May 30 1737

Dear Sr

	We were favoured wth a Letter from Mr Horne last post, wherein he is so kind as Informe us, that we have in some Particulars disoblidged you, by not Sending you Answers to Such Articles, as you & your Clerk both wrote about, wch we are realy Sorry for, as we never meant to use you ill in any way.

	Such Particulars as your Clerk wrote abt, on rect of his were Sent into Mr Corbetts hands, wth whome we were Commanded to Correspond, in all Affairs relating the Derwentwater Estate, & tho your Letter required Mr Watsons Accot of Arrears to be Sent did not come to our hands till the 8th May Last we thougt it proper to tell Mr Corbett, that these things were Sent for by you, least it Should be taken amiss by the Board that your Clerk Shou’d Correspond wth us on these Affairs.  The reason why your Letter dated 7 Apl last, did not come to hand Sooner than the 8th Inst we know not but as Soon as it did Come, it was answered as was Mr Willocks in Course

	We can Assure you Dear Sr that in wh ever you Apprehend we have Slighted you, it was not Designed, nay on the Contrary we always had a Sensible regard for your friendship.  We Begg if there is any thing wherein we have Disoblidged you, that we may be acquainted with it, that we may have an Opportunity of Acquitting our selves, either by Clearing our Selves of that Charge or in our future Conduct.  There is no one can have the Interest of the Hospital more at heart than we have & you will always not only find that; but our readyness to Oblidge all

	It cannot be a pleasure to us to See you Attack our Integrity by the Late Observations you have made upon our Conduct, yett tho’ it gives us Trouble we are in little Concern about it, knowing our Actions to be Just in all Respects, & no Longer than we behave honestly doe we Desire the bread of the Hospital or any more Living.  We hope Sir from this that no Misunderstanding will be between us & doe Assure you that we are in all respects
