Ravensworth Castle Novem. 4th 1740 To Mr John Maule We reced yours and observe Mr Auditor Hunters Qrys upon our Accot. which we have this day given answers to, opposite to the Severall Querys, & we hope they will be Satisfactory; We are much Obliged to You Gentlemen, for the Dispatch you desire to be made and will on all Occasions make due Acknowledgements. It is more than probable we are afraid that no Declaration of Accots. will be till after the rising of the Parliam.t, but if it shou’d be sooner we hope You’ll take the Opportunity of it, our Compliments pray to all our good friends & beleive us to be Dr Sir Yours &c N:W H:B Queries on the Examination of the Accot. of Nicholas Walton & Hugh Boag Receivers of the Derwentwater Estate Between 31 Decem. 1737 & 30th of June 1739 No.1 Credit is taken for the following Sums for which no Vouchers are produced. Alnwick house &c 2 1/2 Yrs Land Tax £ 0 17 2 Do. Window [tax] £ 0 15 0 Lorbottle Tyth £ 1 13 3 £ 3 5 5 [Answer] Mr Skutt to whom the Money was paid is Agent to the Duyke of Somerset to whom we resigned the Administration to the late Mr Fra Anderson, on his Settling an accot. with us, in which the £3 - 5 - 5 was charged, so that he Acco<oun>ted to us for our Debt & gave no Voucher for the said £ 3 - 5 - 5 No.3 December 30th 1738. 3000 Tyles at 24s per M [thousand] £3 0 0 Should be £3 12 0 Under Computed £0 12 0 [A] The leading of these tyles was only at 20s per M. so that the Charge of £3 is a right one & is a mistake in making the Leading at 24s per M Do No. 3 500 Thraves at 2d per Thrave £5 0 0 Should be £4 3 4 Over computed £0 16 8 NB the Accot. Says 600 thraves which makes the Computation right but does not agree with the Voucher [A] This £5 is allowed to be a right Charge by Wm. Ironsides & Ptners as Undertakers of Building upon whose Accot. it was paid & is for 600 Thraves of Ling or Heather; We are Sorry the voucher disagrees but hope you may Sett it right, as we most certainly pd the £5 & has had it allowed in and with Wm. Ironsides & Ptners. No.8 22 July pd. James Thompson £ 1 - 16 - 8 Receipt says only £ 1 - 16 – 0 8d Overcharged [A] We pay’d James Thompson £ 1 - 16 - 8 as 1/3 of Damage in his Farme by repairing the Breaches in Widehaugh &c. and it may be observed the like Sums were pay’d to John & Matt. Thompson the 24 Octob. & 19 Decemb. 1738 for the other 2/3. so that there is no overcharge. [Q] In what manner the Sum of £ 11862 - 14 - 10 appears to be recd. by these accounts within the time of this Accot. (poundage ought not to be taken for the following Sums) which appear to the Auditor to be allowed before, or not reced. within the time of this Accot. Langley Barrony Accot. says £ 1147 - 1 - 6 Rentals. £1149 -11 - 6 £1145 - 5 - 6 £ 2294 -17 - 0 the 1/2 is 1147 - 8 - 6 Short charged 7s [A] Langley Barrony is properly charged at £1147 - 1 - 6, there being an Overcharge in the Rental for the half yr due mayday 1738 in Bondage <Kine> 3s, in Bondage Coals 3s9d, in Mr Widdringtons Burrow r[en]t 3d So that the Rental is overcharged £ 0 - 7 - 0 [Q] Meldon Accot. Says £ 1183 - 16 - 0 Rentals £1189 - 17 - 0 £1178 - 15 - 0 £2368 - 12 - 0 the 1/2 is 1184 - 6 - 0 Overcharged £ 1 - 10 - 0 [A] Meldon is not overcharged as the £ 1 - 10 is due from Alderman Clayton, but omitted in Mildon Estate & added in the Rental commencing at Mayday 1737 out of Cource; Examine the Rental & You’ll find it so. [Q] Castlerigg Accot. Says £ 288 - 9 - 1 1/2 Rentals £ 233 - 6 - 1 £ 54 -17 - 0 1/2 £ 232 -18 - 0 £ 54 -17 - 0 1/2 £ 575 -18 - 2. the 1/2 is 287 - 19 - 1 Overcharged 6s - 0 1/2 [A] This 6s 1/2d is no overcharge for it is 1/2 a Yrs Rent of Pattinson’s Houses due Mayday 1738 & omitted in the Demaine lands altho’ you’l find it added to the Rentall Comencing Mayday 1737 £ 0 - 4 - 5 and also John Gunson omitted in the Demaine lands & added aforesd 2s [making] £ 0 - 6 - 0 1/2 Qry: why the fee farm rents in this estates are not charged distinct as they are in Northumberland James Hunter auditor [A] The Fee Farme Rents in this Estate ever were charged distinct in any former Rentals & for that reason were not distinguished by us.
