Ravensworth Castle 16 Novemb. 1738 To Mr Jeffers, Attorney at Law in Berwick Sir Mr Ancrum our tenant at Scremerston writes us that Mrs Orde (for whom we perceive you are Concerned) has serv’d a Citation upon him for the Nonpaym[en]t of Tyth Woole. We apprehend the Dispute to be whether Mr Ancrum is Obliged to pay that Tyth as it has been the Custom time out of mind, or that he shall pay a Rate fix’d by Mrs Ord upon every Tenth fleece of wool wch was due for sheep sold before the shearing time. Mr Ancrum is ready to pay what we apprehend is right & we do assure you nothing else shall be done by us that may create a dispute, yet as the rights of the Hospital is Concernd in it we must defend, but we hope you will prevent it by an amicable accomodation. We are unwilling to stir up any ill Blood , that may occation any dispute wth Mrs Ord, but we cannot but observe an irregularity in her drawing Tyth hay in Scremmerston this year, which may probably occation one, And we are Sir, Yr. most Humble Servts Nichos.
