Letter – Nicholas Walton to Nicholas Ruddock – 19 Sep 1791

Mr Walton Junr’s Comp[limen]ts to Mr Ruddock, and has recd his favor of the 15th Inst accompanying the Minutes of the Meeting in Allendale Town on Thursday the 11th of last month, but no Minutes made since tho[ugh] Mr Ruddock says he sent the Resolutions formed at the first meeting & since. Mr Walton thinks it will be too much to divide 1/3d of the whole of the Commons, and it requires great consideration what part sh[oul]d be divided. It is presumed that all the Incroachments that have been made 20 years & upwards are to continue to the several properties to which they are attached and that all such parts of the Common as have been incroached within 20 years shall be considered as a part of the quantity to be divided. Mr W. observes that it is the intentions that the Lord of the Manor shall have 1/16th part for his consent to the Division. Should it not be that he is to have one sixteenth part for his consent to the dividing and inclosing the specific number of Acres to be divided, and to have one  sixteenth part of the stints in the parts of the Commons which are to be stinted. It will certainly be a very desirable thing to have an Allotment made for the extinguishing of all Tithes Moduses etc both in Allendale and Hexhamshire and that a part or parts of the Commons Sh[oul]d be sold to defray the expences of obtaining an Act etc.  – As no doubt there is <are several> parts of the Boundaries in dispute it w[oul]d be well to endeavour to have these matters adjusted as <quick> as possible previous to the Application to Parliament, and in all such parts where such Disputes can be settled it is? We certainly prefer to set forth the

Boundaries in the Act of Parliament so as to settle the same for ever, and Mr W. hopes that the Dispute between Sir Thos. Blackett & the Comm[ision]ers & Gov[erno]rs of Greenwich Hospital may be settled amicably <and appear> in the Act in case the Division goes forward. Mr W will be obliged to Mr Ruddock for his Sentiments on the above when he sends the further Resolutions.
