To Mr Thos. Simpson

Sir

I Reced. yours of the 11th Inst & am glad Mr Birkett has at last Settled his tedious dispute, & that you apprehend Mr Jefferson’s Money will be ready on giving Mr Ritson notice. I am sorry the Parson is so much out of order.

Widdow Lancaster acts imprudently as I am afraid her refusing to give her Note will be a means to prevent our Board from Shewing her Compassion, but as I cannot see you can do more with her, it must rest where it is till we see her. Mr Pearson can Inform you how we came to the knowledge of the Charge upon Mr Tolson, so that pray Inform your self of him, as to that Matter. I have wrote to him to wait upon You for that purpose at such time as You shall fix. But supposing these Proofs never so clear to you, if we cannot recover the Money, to what purpose is it to waist time in making an Enquiry.

You have done very right in telling Mr Radley that our Proof in the Cause ag<ain>st Dr Richardson is not sufficient, for we had better not proceed at all than be disappointed in the Issue. The Affidavits you drew Mr Radley has by him & I dare say Mr Airey has made no other Step than Transmitting these Affidavits to him.

      I am Sir Yours &c

      N. Walton
The letter concerns matters on the Keswich and Thornthwaite estate. Widow Lancaster was fined for cutting wood without permission at Thornthwaite.
