Ravensworth Castle Nov 3 : 1739 To Mr Thos. Simpson Sr We have received a Letter from Mr Radley who is Solic[itor] to the Hosp Acquainting us that he has orders to prosecute Mr Jefferson of Cockermouth for Cutting down and Selling Timber from the mannour of Thornthwaite & desiring to know his Christian name, place of aboade & what quantity of each Species of Timber he Cutt down and sold & in what wood or part of the Mann’r the same Grew when it was begun to be Cutt down. We desire you will therefore on rec.t of this or as soon as you can fix a day goe soon to Keswick and Inform your self of all the above p.ticulars & such others as are necessry to give Mr Radley Instructions to start <fair>. Mr Jefferson is to be <watch’d> by Information in the Exchequer & not by Bill of Intrusion pray be as Expeditious as you can and Send the proper Instructions to Sir Your very Hble Servt Nich. Walton PS. We believe Mr Jefferson Cutt down no sort of wood but Birch and Alder, which was sold to one Wm Miles a Clogger at Keswick, but Mr Pearson will Inform you. You will Take Care to see that There be proper Evidence to prove the fact of which you will likewise Inform us. Mr Jefferson promised to make submission and to offer Satisfaction to the board which we acquainted them with If therefore he wou’d do so speedily it might stop the proceedings against him.
