Letter – Nicholas Walton to William Corbett – 11 Aug 1738

      Ravensworth Castle  August 11th. 1738

To William Corbett Esqr.



Sir

      We reced. yours of the 5th of the 5th of this Inst. With one Inclosed for Mr Constable wch we have forwarded to him.

	In answer to Mr Maules Letter of the 5 July last, relating the Survey of the Derwentwater Estate we waited upon Collonel Liddell, & shewed him that part wch he was desired to explain, which he promised us he woud write to you about this post, & doubt not but he has done so, to wch we begg leave to referr.

	As to what Mr Maule required of us to Explain, we have Inclosed sent you an Accot. Coppyd from what we made up Mr Thompsons Accot. from, in which you will observe we took a great deal of pains to distinguish the Commons, from the Ingrounds, by the alterations we made from the field Book, which we hope will give satisfaction to the Board.

	Mr Richardson with whom the Hospitall has a dispute about a piece of Common in Alston Moore in wch the vein called Clargill Cleugh lyes, sent up five persons to Burn some Turbery wch was cast upon that piece of Common by one Mr Thos Whitfield as Freeholder within the Manour, who were taken by Mr Whitfield & Carryed by him before a Justice of the Peace for the County of Cumberland, on Monday the 17 July last, one of wch 5 persons made his Escape & the other four was bound over to the next Sessions , Mr Richardson having Enterd into a recognizance for their appearance. Since wch Mr Whitfield writes us, that he has had a letter from Mr Richarson desiring he will not goe on with the prosecution & promising he will make any satisfaction for the damage he has done, & give up any further Claim to the Common in dispute. To this we have given answer that we do not know whether the Direct[or]s will think fitt to accept of any acknowledgement other than giving up any Claim to the Common in dispute by an Instrument under his hand wch if he agrees to we hope it may putt an end to any further dispute in that Affair. We were at Alston when the Criminalls were taken & assisted in getting them punished & also agreed to Joyn wth Mr Whitfield in the Expencethat should accrue on if prosectution wch we hope the Direct[or]s will approve of.  The Heirs of Dr Chamberlain impower Messrs <Paltock> & Snow to receive their Int[erest], so that you may address a Lre to them at the Golden Anchor without Temple Barr. Inclosed we send you our Cash Accot. for last March on wch is a Balance of £97-15-8 in our favour & we are Sir

PS. Inclosed we send you Mr Stephensons Quarterly Accot ending at Midsummer last of Ore raised, wth the Number of hands employed on Alston moore besides wch there is 4 hands Employed at Keswick .

	I am Commanded by the Directors of Greenwich Hospitall to give you the Trouble of this, to desire you will please to Inform them, whether it be most agreeable to you to have your Debt of £5,900 on the Derwentwater Estate paid off, or Continued at a Lower Interest, if the latter be your Choice, you will be pleased to inform them which is the Lowest Interest you will accept of
