Letter – Nicholas Walton to William Corbett – 12 Aug 1740

      Ravensworth Castle Augst 12th 1740

To Wm. Corbett Esqr.



Sir

	In our last saturdays Newcastle Journal & Newcastle Curr.t was Incerted the Inclosed Invitation to the Gentlemen, Clergy & Freeholders of the County of Northumberland, whereby we Observe an Opposition is intended to the present Members. We therefore beg leave to desire You will acquaint the Board therewith; That we apprehend the Derwentwater Estate will command a very Considerable Interest, if it is taken Care of in time, & that the Sooner we know their pleasure, the more able will we be to make that Interest Secure. We have already ordered the Bayliffs to be with us to Morrow, in order to consider with us, who we may reasonably Expect, & then we propose imediately to Send them to all Such to prevent their Engaging, before we have the Boards Commands.

	Inclosed you will receive a further Agreement for building & repairing Housing on that part of Newton Hall Farmed by John Jopling amount to £75. This Agreement would have been Sent with those the Board last approved of, but that we could not agree with the Tennant upon the Method of doing it then.

To the Gentlemen, Clergy and Freeholders of the County of Northumberland.

A general Meeting is desired to be held at the House of Mr Francis Rumney, at the Queen’s Head, in Morpeth, on Thursday the 28th Inst. at 11 O’Clock; to consider of two proiper persons to represent this County in the insuing Parliament. 





August 11th, 1740

Then agreed with Mr John Bell & Ptnrs, for Building & Repairing the following Houses on the Derwentwater Estate Subject to the approbation of the Board viz.



Newton Hall  John Jopling Tennant

For Repairing, new Flooring, mending the Roof, new Thatch, putting up two Partitions, and a new Stair Case in the House injoyed by Thomas Jopling, Under Tennant, 37 foot by 15 foot, Building a new Stable 17 by 15 foot, repairing, new Flooring and Thatching another House, in the middle of the Street, for the Quarter John Jopling injoys, new Thatching the Eastmost Long house in the Street, and new Building a Stable in Shaw Field 21 by 15 foot. The whole to be well done, Exclusive of Leading, for Seventy five Pounds.
